The parking area for the main Mt. Major trails is large, paved and well marked off Rt. 11. This is a popular hiking destination, so expect the lot to be crowded on nice days.
Make sure you familiarize yourself with the trails map at the kiosk before heading out. There are well maintained porta-potty's on the lot also.
The trail is well worn, with several rocky scrambles on the main blue trail to the top.
Like any hike in New England, there are lots of interesting things to see along the way. The fracturing of the rocks on the mountain is very peculiar. I'm sure a geologist can explain the reason the rocks on this mountain tend to break apart in layers. But for the rest of us - it's just cool. And if you ARE a geologist, feel free to leave the answer in the comments below!
This is an enjoyable hike for the whole family. The moderate climb is rewarded with spectacular views like the one below in a 360 degree photo below the summit. The views from Mount Major remind me of those from West Rattlesnake Mountain, an easier hike, an hour drive northwest in Center Sandwich, NH. If you like fantastic lake views - make sure these two destinations are on your list!
